Blythe is a city in the far eastern corner of Riverside County, California, in the Palo Verde Valley along the Colorado River, roughly 224 miles east of Los Angeles and just west of the Arizona state line. With a population of roughly 17,000, it is the principal city of an arid agricultural region that stands apart from the rest of Southern California. The city traces its name to Thomas Blythe, a San Francisco financier who, in 1877, filed the first claims for Colorado River water in the valley and set in motion the irrigation that would transform the desert into farmland.
