Gridley is a small city in Butte County, California, set in the flat, fertile country of the Sacramento Valley about fifty-six miles north of Sacramento along State Route 99. It was named for George W. Gridley, its founder and earliest landowner, and grew from a ranching and grain-farming settlement into a market town for the surrounding agricultural district. Two major fires, in 1884 and 1891, destroyed much of the original business district, which the community rebuilt around 1900, leaving a compact historic downtown that still anchors the city. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy. Commercial rice farming took hold in Butte County beginning in 1912, and rice, along with orchards, field crops, hay, and cattle, has shaped the region ever since. Gridley's position on State Route 99 gives it practical commuting access: Oroville is about fifteen miles away, Chico about thirty, and Sacramento about sixty, with Yuba City to the south.
