La Palma is a small, densely settled city in northwest Orange County, California, near the Los Angeles County line. Incorporated on October 26, 1955, as the city of Dairyland, it is one of three communities in the area that grew directly out of the region's dairy-farming industry—alongside Dairy Valley (now Cerritos) and Dairy City (now Cypress). When the dairies relocated east in the mid-1960s, residents renamed the community La Palma, after the region's main thoroughfare, La Palma Avenue. The city covers only about 1.8 square miles, which makes it one of Orange County's smallest and most compact municipalities. That small footprint has shaped its character: La Palma is a planned residential community of mostly single-family homes on tidy streets, with a network of parks and a landscaped greenbelt running through it. Its density and layout give it a distinctly suburban, family-oriented feel, and the city has long been noted for low crime rates relative to the rest of the county. La Palma's location is one of its greatest assets. It sits near the junction of several major freeways and within easy reach of the employment, shopping, and entertainment centers of Anaheim, Cypress, Buena Park, Cerritos, and Long Beach. At the same time, the city maintains its own small-town civic identity, with Central Park and its community center serving as the heart of local life. Because it is served by multiple school districts rather than a single unified system, La Palma's families are distributed among several elementary and secondary districts, a distinctive feature of the city's educational landscape. Residents enjoy a level of community cohesion unusual for such a small, landlocked suburb, with civic events, neighborhood parks, and a walkable greenbelt fostering a sense of place. Taken together, La Palma offers a quiet, well-kept residential environment in the middle of one of Southern California's most connected corridors.
