Lynwood is a suburban city in Los Angeles County, California, occupying a compact area in the central Los Angeles Basin roughly ten miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is bordered by South Gate to the northwest and Compton to the south, and it forms part of the Gateway Cities region of southeast Los Angeles County. Incorporated on July 16, 1921, Lynwood grew as a residential community during the twentieth century, and at the 2020 census it had a population of 67,265. The city developed along the Southern California streetcar and early highway network, and its central position between the I-105 (Century) Freeway and I-710 (Long Beach) Freeway continues to define its role as a convenient residential base for people working across Los Angeles County. Long Beach Boulevard and Imperial Highway cross through the city and carry much of its commercial activity. Lynwood is a predominantly Latino community with deep Mexican-American roots, reflected in its businesses, churches, and public celebrations. Its most prominent landmark is Plaza México, a shopping and cultural center on Long Beach Boulevard designed in the style of traditional Mexican plazas; it hosts festivals, performances, and events including Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day celebrations. The city is served by the Lynwood Unified School District, which operates elementary, middle, and high schools including Lynwood High School and Firebaugh High School. Metro's C Line light rail stops at Lynwood Station on Long Beach Boulevard, giving residents a direct rail connection across the South Bay and to the broader regional transit system.
