Mi Wuk Village is a small census-designated place in Tuolumne County, California, tucked into the central Sierra Nevada along State Route 108, roughly 14 miles east of Sonora. It is one of several mountain communities strung along the Highway 108 corridor between Twain Harte and the higher reaches of Sonora Pass, and it draws its name from the Miwok (or Me-Wuk) people who historically inhabited the region. The community sits at an elevation of about 4,300 feet, which gives it cooler summer weather than the valley towns below and frequent winter snow. Its population was recorded at 935 in the 2020 census, but the character of the place is shaped as much by its seasonal residents as its year-round ones: a substantial share of the housing stock consists of cabins and vacation cottages that fill through the warmer months and on winter ski weekends. Mi Wuk Village functions as a quiet residential base for people who work in Sonora and the broader Mother Lode region, as well as for retirees and second-home owners drawn to the forest setting. The surrounding Stanislaus National Forest frames daily life, with Highway 108 serving as the main artery both for local errands and for recreation traffic heading toward Pinecrest Lake, Dodge Ridge, and the Sonora Pass beyond. Unlike the gold-rush-era towns to the west, Mi Wuk Village grew as a twentieth-century mountain retreat, and that resort lineage still shows in its weathered cabins and informal, woodsy streetscapes. It is less a self-contained town than a forest community that shares services, schools, and commerce with its neighbors along the corridor. Residents do much of their everyday shopping in Twain Harte a few minutes west, while Sonora, the county seat, anchors the region with its hospital, government offices, and larger retailers. The result is a place whose appeal rests squarely on the mountain setting itself — cool summers, snowy winters, and quick access to one of California's most approachable stretches of the Sierra Nevada.
