Silicon Valley's Southern Gateway

Apartments in Morgan Hill, CA

Welcome to Morgan Hill, a Santa Clara County city at the southern edge of Silicon Valley, where wineries, Henry W. Coe State Park, and a Caltrain downtown station meet.

Morgan Hill is a city in southern Santa Clara County, California, at the lower end of Silicon Valley and the edge of the San Francisco Bay Area's suburban sprawl. With a population of about 45,500, it balances a historic small-town downtown with direct access to the region's technology economy, sitting astride U.S. 101 roughly halfway between San Jose and Gilroy. The city's story begins in ranching and agriculture. In the late 1800s, Hiram Morgan Hill married Diana Murphy, heiress to part of the Rancho Laguna Seca, and the couple developed the Morgan Hill Ranch near El Toro, the prominent peak that overlooks the town to the west. The city took its name from the rancher, while El Toro — also known as Murphy's Peak — carries a local legend that author Bret Harte named it after witnessing two bulls fighting near its summit. Agriculture and viticulture remain part of Morgan Hill's identity. The surrounding Santa Clara Valley is wine country, with vineyards and tasting rooms spread through the rolling hills, and the city's orchard heritage lingers in its rural edges. Recreation is a major strength. Henry W. Coe State Park, the largest state park in Northern California, sits about 13 miles east of town and offers extensive backcountry hiking, camping, and views across the Diablo Range. Anderson Lake County Park, on the way to Coe, adds boating, fishing, and trails, while El Toro and the oak-dotted hillsides provide closer-to-home open space. The downtown is a focal point of community life, with restaurants, shops, and civic buildings along Monterey Road. The city's Caltrain station offers weekday commuter rail into San Jose and up the Peninsula toward San Francisco, and U.S. 101 is the primary road corridor. Schools are provided by Morgan Hill Unified School District, which operates elementary, middle, and high schools across the city and neighboring San Martin. The district gives families a local K-12 path within the community. Morgan Hill attracts residents who want a more spacious, small-town feel — vineyards, hills, and a walkable downtown — while remaining connected to Silicon Valley jobs. Its position between San Jose and the agricultural South Valley gives it a distinctive blend of the two.
