Welcome to Pauma Valley, an agricultural valley in northern San Diego County where citrus and avocado groves spread beneath Palomar Mountain on the ancestral lands of the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians.

Pauma Valley is an unincorporated community and geographic valley in northern San Diego County, California, situated between Valley Center and Palomar Mountain. The name comes from the Luiseño language and is commonly translated as "place where there is water," a reference to the creeks and groundwater that have supported settlement here for thousands of years. The San Luis Rey Mission, founded in 1798, established ranchos in the Temecula and Pauma valleys, and the area remains central to the history of the Luiseño people. The Pauma Band of Luiseño Mission Indians has been federally recognized since 1891 and established in 1892, making it one of seven Luiseño bands located across San Diego and Riverside counties. The band's reservation and tribal headquarters are located in Pauma Valley. In the modern era the tribe has expanded its agricultural holdings, cultivating citrus and avocado groves, some of them certified organic. Agriculture defines much of Pauma Valley's landscape. Citrus and avocado orchards spread across the valley floor, and the region is known for the groves that line its roads and hillsides. Beyond the orchards, the valley is a mix of ranch properties, estate home sites, and smaller rural residences, with much of the land still in open or agricultural use. Palomar Mountain rises to the east, providing a scenic backdrop and a cooler, forested counterpoint to the valley's warmer climate. Pauma Valley's development is deliberately spread out. There is no dense commercial core; instead, the valley is a series of orchards, ranches, and homesites strung along State Route 76. Residents travel to nearby Valley Center for everyday services and to the cities of North County for employment, while the valley itself remains a quiet, rural pocket within a county otherwise known for suburban growth. For people drawn to land, agriculture, and mountain views, Pauma Valley offers a distinctly rural setting within commuting range of greater San Diego.
