Quartz Hill is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the Antelope Valley region of northern Los Angeles County, on the high-desert floor west of Lancaster and near Palmdale. The 2020 census recorded 11,447 residents across about 3.76 square miles, and the Quartz Hill name is also used for neighboring districts within the two cities. The community was once home to the Quartz Hill Airport, a reminder of the area's earlier, more wide-open days in the high desert. Quartz Hill's defining character is its semi-rural, country feel. Unlike the master-planned subdivisions that dominate much of Lancaster and Palmdale, Quartz Hill is known for larger lots — some over an acre — and a notable number of horse properties. Local real estate professionals describe it as the most country living with small-town vibes in the Lancaster area, where residents trade some suburban convenience for space, quiet, and room for animals and equipment. That character has made it a long-standing destination for families seeking a rustic hometown feel within the Antelope Valley. The community is served by the Westside Union School District for elementary and middle grades; the district also covers West Lancaster, Leona Valley, and several smaller valley communities. High school students continue to the Antelope Valley Union High School District. Most residents own their homes, and daily life centers on the area's schools, parks, and the wide-open desert landscape. Commuting is oriented toward Lancaster, Palmdale, and, for some, the aerospace and logistics employers of the Antelope Valley. Quartz Hill offers a distinctive blend of country acreage and convenience to two growing high-desert cities. It is the Antelope Valley's best-known pocket of horse-country living.
